Clear View Fencing vs ClearVu: What's the Difference (and Does It Matter)?

02 Apr 2025

If you've started researching see-through security fencing, you've almost certainly come across two terms used side by side: "clear view fencing" and "ClearVu". They sound interchangeable, and in everyday conversation they're often used that way — but they don't mean the same thing. Knowing the difference helps you compare quotes fairly and focus on what actually protects your boundary line.

"Clear view fencing" is a category, not a single product

Clear view fencing describes a whole category of see-through, welded-mesh security fencing — closely spaced vertical and horizontal wires that create a strong physical barrier while remaining almost transparent from a distance. The narrow apertures resist cutting and give very few footholds, which is why this style of fencing has become a popular, low-maintenance choice for residential, commercial and industrial perimeters. Many manufacturers produce their own version of it.

ClearVu is a specific brand

ClearVu (sometimes written CLEARVU) is a registered trademark belonging to Cochrane Steel Products. It is one particular brand of welded-mesh fencing within the broader clear view category — a product name, not a generic description of the fence type.

For context, South African courts have confirmed that "clear view" and its component words are descriptive terms used across the industry, and aren't exclusively ownable by any single brand. That is precisely why several companies, Bastion included, are able to offer their own clear view fencing products built on the same general welded-mesh approach.

Where Bastion fits in

To be completely clear: Bastion's Clear View Fencing is Bastion's own product. We do not sell, distribute or install ClearVu-branded product, and we are not affiliated with or endorsed by Cochrane Steel. When you ask us about clear view fencing, you're getting our specification and our workmanship — nothing else implied.

What actually matters when you compare quotes

Regardless of the brand on the quote, the real performance of welded-mesh fencing comes down to a handful of specifications. These are the questions worth asking every supplier:

  • Mesh aperture size. Smaller gaps between the wires mean fewer footholds and far greater resistance to cutting tools. Tight apertures are the single biggest factor separating a genuine anti-climb panel from a decorative one.
  • Wire gauge. Thicker wire resists cutting and bending. A panel can look identical from the street and still be markedly weaker if a thinner gauge has been used.
  • Post spacing and material. Panels are only as strong as the posts holding them. Correct post spacing, adequate steel section and a properly engineered, well-set foundation keep the line rigid and difficult to lever open.
  • Galvanizing and powder-coat quality. In our climate, corrosion is the slow enemy. Hot-dip galvanizing under the powder coat is what keeps a fence sound and low-maintenance for years rather than rusting at the welds.
  • Professional installation. Even the best panels underperform if the line isn't level, posts aren't plumb and concrete isn't cured. A professionally managed installation is part of the product, not an optional extra.
  • Warranty. A clear, written workmanship warranty tells you a supplier stands behind both the materials and the installation. Read what it actually covers, and for how long.

The bottom line

The name on the brochure matters far less than the specification behind it. Whether a quote says "clear view" or names a particular brand, compare aperture, gauge, posts, coating, installation and warranty — that's what determines how well the fence protects your property over its lifetime.

The simplest way to compare like for like is to have your boundary assessed in person. We're happy to walk your perimeter, talk through the trade-offs and recommend a tailored specification — no obligation. Request a site assessment and we'll take it from there.
